Is Humanitarianism Fit for Purpose? Ethical considerations on humanitarian practices from a practitioner and historical perspective

March 17, 2022 -
10:00am to 11:00am

Abstract: This meet up between Karl Blanchet (Director of the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies), Caroline Abu Sa'Da (President of SOS Mediterranee Switzerland), and Bertrand Taithe (Humanitarian and Conflict Response) is devoted to ethical considerations on humanitarian practices from a practitioner and historical perspective. Discussants will use this broad heading to consider ethical and practical issues arising from ongoing emergencies, protracted situations, and new developments in conflict zones. The discussion will engage specifically with the situation in Afghanistan, rescue work at sea, and the debates raging in the humanitarian sector since 2016.

(This discussion may serve as a prelude to the Rethinking War conference beginning March 18; see below.)
