Ethics and Medicine Grand Rounds

Travis Rieder, PhD
Research Scholar
Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics

Abstract: Dr. Rieder will share his experience with opioid withdrawal and offer an ethical argument for reforms in the healthcare system to support patients who must use opioids—as he did during his arduous recovery from a motorcycle accident that required five surgeries. He argues that physicians must be prepared to help a patient over the lifetime of the medication regimen. His experience and analysis shed light on the medical, social, and historical factors that lead to thousands of opioid deaths annually in the US.
