UPMC Shadyside Medicine Grand Rounds

Kristen Ann Ehrenberger, MD PhD (History)
Assistant Professor, Medicine and Pediatrics

Abstract: In the middle of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, many people are looking back to the polio vaccination campaigns of the mid-20th century. In this talk, Kristen Ehrenberger will explore the historical contexts for the development of the polio vaccines in use today, including smallpox inoculation, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (aka March of Dimes), and the Cutter Incident. Due to vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is still ongoing. She will conclude with practical advice for reporting adverse events due to vaccines.
