Amy Milne-Smith is a specialist in Victorian masculinity. Her first book, London Clubland: A Cultural History of Gender and Class in Late Victorian Britain, focused on elite definitions of Victorian masculinity. Her most recent book, Out of his Mind: Masculinity and Mental Illness in Victorian Britain, explores the experiences and cultural representations of men deemed mad by Victorian society across the social spectrum. She is currently working on a Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council-funded project inspired by this book, “Before Shell Shock: Madness and Mental Health in the British Army, 1857-1914.”
