Abstract: An increasing number of American medical trainees and practitioners travel abroad to volunteer in areas where there are fewer health care practitioners or resources. Though often done with the best intentions, these endeavors are beset with ethical concerns and can have unintended consequences. This talk will consider the history of such endeavors, the ethical concerns global health volunteering raises, and ways to address as well as attempt to mitigate these concerns.
