Abstract: As many as one-half of US physicians report feeling burned out, suggesting that a systemic problem exists; however, the proposed solutions to this problem often take the form of wellness initiatives aimed at individual clinicians. This presentation will examine some of the structural sources of physician burnout and contend that the root of the problem is that medicine is no longer understood as a moral practice. The presentation will also suggest how Catholic Social Teaching offers some potential remedies for this affliction.
