Pushing the Limits: Children, Athletics and Ethics

July 23, 2021 (All day) to July 24, 2021 (All day)

16th Annual Pediatric Bioethics Conference

Abstract: Athletics are a central part of the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults. Children are engaging in athletics at younger ages and higher intensities than ever before. Understanding of the benefits and risks of athletic participation is increasing, and serious ethical questions have emerged. These include:

  • Has the line blurred between disciplined coaching and abuse?
  • What is the role of bioethics in domains beyond medicine?
  • What constitutes an unfair advantage?
  • Has the business of youth athletics led to a “play gap?”
  • What is the true purpose of youth athletics?

Speakers will examine the benefits and risks of athletic participation and examine issues of inclusion and fairness, as well as the roles of healthcare providers, parents, and coaches in creating a healthy environment for children participating in athletics.

The conference agenda is here.
