Re-Purposing Research Samples During a Pandemic: Bridging Public Health Ethics and Research Ethics Frameworks

Abstract: These two faculty members from the NIH Department of Bioethics will discuss their examination of the circumstances surrounding the recently alleged research use of biological specimens collected in the Seattle Flu Study in order to assess community spread of COVID-19. More broadly, they will explore ethical parameters for determining appropriate investigational and surveillance activities with archived biological samples during a pandemic, at the interface of public health monitoring and human subject research.
