Alex John London, PhD

Professional Statement

Alex John London is the K&L Gates Professor of Ethics and Computational Technologies at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on ethical and policy issues surrounding the development and deployment of novel technologies in medicine, biotechnology and artificial intelligence. He is a member of the World Health Organization Expert Group on Adaptive Platform Trials and previously served as a member of the Expert Group on Ethics and Governance of AI. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative for Translating Emerging Science, Technology, and Innovation (ACT-ESTI) and has played authorship roles for consensus documents on research ethics for the National Academy of Medicine and on research ethics guidelines for the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Dr. London’s book For the Common Good: Philosophical Foundations of Research Ethics was published in 2022 with Oxford University Press. He is also co-editor of the popular textbook Ethical Issues in Modern Medicine, and teaches courses on ethical theory, bioethics, ethics and AI, and research ethics.
