After-hours Communication Support for Hospice Family Caregivers and Patients
Mary Beth Happ is a co-investigator for this project, funded by NINR, to examine the value of video-telecommunication to family caregivers providing hospice care.

End-of-Life Education in the Third Year of Medical School
David Barnard was awarded a grant from the National Canter Institute (NCI) to educate third year medical students regarding end-of-life issues.  Bob Arnold is a co-principal investigator.  The grant supports the application of cutting edge web-based instructional technologies to deliver “just-in-time” educational material on various aspects of palliative care to third-year medical students.  The initial focus was on education of third-year medical students in their medicine and surgery clerkships.

Crossing Over: Narratives of Palliative Care (Oxford University Press, 2000)
In this collaborative book project, David Barnard and three co-authors collected and analyzed the narratives of those providing and receiving end-of-life palliative care. The project includes guidance for using the manuscript in palliative care education, as well as an introduction to the qualitative research methods employed in the project.

Palliative Care in Hospitalized Cancer Patients
Mary Beth Happ and Bob Arnold received funding from NCI as part of a national multi-site study to study the structure, processes, and outcomes of care among hospitalized patients with advanced cancer who receive Palliative Care Consultation Team services as compared to similar patients receiving usual hospital care.

Palliative Medicine Fellowship
With funding from the Vira Heinz Endowment, David Barnard and collaborators developed palliative medicine fellowship training.  The fellowship is formally accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which has led to the receipt of federal funding for Palliative Medicine Fellows. 

Understanding and Addressing the Provider Role
Bob Arnold received funding from the Veterans’ Administration to study providers’ decisionmaking regarding the prescription of opiates by internists, surgeons, and emergency room doctors for patients with non-malignant pain.

UPMC Palliative Care Program
Bob Arnold received funding from the Ladies Hospital Aid Society of Western Pennsylvania for the Palliative Care Program which he directs.

PDIA/Kornfeld Grant
The Project on Death in America and the Kornfeld Foundation funded Robert Arnold’s project to develop a curriculum and training program for fellows in palliative medicine, to prepare them for a career in academic medicine.

Advanced Illness Coordinated Care: A Proposal for a Community Collaboration
Robert Arnold received funding for the Community Collaborative Project, which is a demonstration project utilizing the Advanced Illness Coordinated Care (AICC) Program, a six-visit program focusing on the unique psychosocial and specialized care coordination issues faced by individuals with an advanced illness. Implementation is through a partnership with Heritage Valley Health System, Highmark and the Center for Advanced Illness Coordinated Care.
